Load Displacement

What is Load Displacement?

Load Displacement Generation refers to electricity generation installed behind the meter, meaning it is used directly on-site to reduce electricity consumption or demand from the grid. This type of generation can use either renewable or non-renewable energy sources and is intended solely to meet the energy needs of the facility where it is installed.

The latest Load Displacement rules can be found on the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) website.

How do I get started?

  1. Determine the appropriate size of the generation unit based on your energy needs. Use your past electricity bills as a reference to help tailor the system to your specific consumption patterns.
  2. Research your options for load displacement energy resources. Energy consultants, industry organizations, technical advisors, and equipment suppliers can provide helpful information and guidance.
  3. Review the connection process. The steps for connecting a load displacement project are similar to those for net metering, except a bi-directional meter will not be installed since the system is not intended to export electricity to the grid. Please follow the connection process outlined on the Net Metering page of the NT Power website (Net Metering | NT Power).
  4. Once you have determined the appropriate system size, please complete the relevant Preliminary Consultation Information Request form and submit it to the DER Team using the webform located at the bottom of the Net Metering page (Net Metering | NT Power).

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between net metering and load displacement?

Net metering allows you to send excess electricity from your renewable generation system (like solar panels) back to the grid in exchange for credits on your electricity bill. In contrast, load displacement involves generating electricity solely for your own use to reduce your electricity consumption from the grid — it does not involve exporting power or receiving credits.

How long does the process take?

The duration of the process varies depending on the size and complexity of the project.

How much does the process cost?

Costs vary based on the scope of the project. To receive an accurate estimate, please submit a formal application.

Am I eligible for Generation?

Eligibility is assessed on a case-by-case basis. To determine your eligibility, please submit a Preliminary Consultation Information Request Form.

How much does a generation system cost?

Generation system costs vary widely depending on the technology and installation. For pricing information, please contact a renewable generation installation company.
